The acidity or basicity of each substance can be determined using:
• Universal indicator paper. This type of indicator paper produces a range of colours that can be matched to a standard colour card.
• A variety of different indicators to cover the whole pH range. By testing each solution with different indicators, the pH of the solution can sometimes be determined within a narrow range.
• pH meter and pH electrode. This system uses a galvanic cell to measure electrical potential differences across the glass membrane of the pH electrode. The differences in voltage are related to pH. The pH probe and meter must first be calibrated with solutions of known pH (called buffers). This is the simplest and most accurate method.
Solutions to test
• Acidic solutions: 0.01 mot L ; vinegar; lemonade; lemonjuice; milk.
• Basic solutions: 0.01 mot L ; baking sodasolution; ammonia solution; chlorine bleach.
Results and analysis
Depending on the method used, the pH values obtained for the tested solutions should be close to the results.
Accuracy and reliability
The results obtained will vary, especially with commercial products, due to normal differences in composition of the materials selected. Reliability can be improved by ensuring the pHmeter is calibrated regularly and stored correctly.
