30L-1

THE COLLINS 30L-1 Linear Amplifier

The Collins 30L-1 Linear Amplifier has 1000 watts PEP power input on SSB and 1000 watts average on CW on all bands. It can be driven by the Collins 32S-3 Transmitter Collins KWM-2 or KWM-1 Transceiver, or most 70-100 watt exciters.

Finished in the same attractive light gray as Collins’ famous S/Line equipment and the KWM-2, the 30L-1 has all the controls conveniently accessible on the front panel.

This linear amplifier is completely self-contained and designed for table-top use. It is easily transported in a CC-2 Carrying Case.

The Collins 30L-1 features:

AUTOMATIC LOAD CONTROL allowing a high average level of modulation and optimum power output from the amplifier, within the rated limits of distortion.

RF INVERSE FEEDBACK reduces distortion products giving cleanest signal on the air. SOLID STATE RECTIFIERS resulting in heat reduction.

SELF-CONTAINED POWER SUPPLY with safety interlock circuits for grounding the high voltage when the cover is removed.

AUTOMATIC ANTENNA TRANSFER ON THE ON-OFF SWITCH permits the 30L-I to be switched in or out of the circuit at will by operating the switch.

The 30-L-1 provides SSB and CW emission and covers the 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands. Provisions are made for general coverage use, too. Automatic Load Control voltage from the 30L-1 is fed back to the exciter, providing maximum talking power without over driving and distortion. In combination with RF inverse feedback, Collins’ exclusive Automatic Load Control provides not only more power, but a sharper signal than any comparable unit in the amateur field.

The 30L-1 is a grounded grid linear amplifier with four 811 A Triodes. They can be replaced without removing the unit from the cabinet. The 811A’s are instantly heated; thus, there is no delay in warm-up.

Indicating devices on the 30L-1 include a panel meter monitoring final amplifier plate current, plate voltage, and tuning circuit. With the meter switch in tune position, the 30L-1 uses an exclusive comparator circuit which can be operated by simply adjusting tuning and loading controls to zero the meter.

The 30L-1’s RF and power supply compartment covers operate safety interlock switches for protection of the operator. Cover removal closes these switches and shorts the high voltage to ground. This arrangement protects the operator from accidentally coming in contact with high voltage dc, which is present in either compartment.

The unit can be operated outside amateur band limits; however, retuning the input circuits may be necessary. Such retuning presents the proper load impedance to the exciter.

Under the hood…

30L-1 CIRCUITRY

GENERAL

The 30L-1 is a portable r-f linear power amplifier, including plate power and bias supplies. It is capable of 1000 watts PEP input power in SSB or 1000 watts d-c input in CW service with any exciter (such as the KWM-1, KWM-2/2A, or 32S-1) capable of 70 watts PEP output. It covers the amateur bands between 3.5 and 29.7 mc. In addition, the amplifier may be operated outside the amateur bands over certain ranges of frequency. These ranges are specified in above. The power amplifier stage uses four 811A triodes connected in parallel with cathode drive.

INPUT CIRCUITS

Broadband pi-network circuits couple the exciting signal into the cathode circuits of the power amplifier tubes. In conjunction with the interconnecting r-f feed cable supplied, this presents a nearly constant 50-ohm load to the exciter This aids in maintaining the low level of distortion products under modulation. For this reason, it is important not to alter the length of interconnecting cable supplied with the amplifier.

OUTPUT CIRCUITS

The plate circuit of the power amplifier is tuned by a pi network consisting of C32, L9, L10, and C33. Capacitor C32 resonates the tank circuit at the frequency in use. It is adjusted by the TUNING control on the front panel. The four-gang capacitor, C33, is adjusted by the LOADING control to match the pi-network circuit to the impedance presented by the antenna and feed system in use. Output from the plate tank circuit is connected through the contacts of antenna changeover relay, K1, to the antenna when the control circuits are energized.

POWER SUPPLY CIRCUITS

Two dc power supplies and one a-c filament supply are included in the 30L-1. The amplifier may be connected to a 115-volt single-phase or to a 230-volt, three-wire, single- phase source. Where practical, the 230-volt, three-wire connection is recommended. Power transformer T1 has two primary windings. These windings are connected in parallel for 115-volt operation, and in series for 230-volt operation. The 6.3-volt secondary winding provides filament power for the 811A tubes through r-f choke L8. It also powers the pilot lamp in the meter. Another secondary winding applies voltage through surge resistor R9 to semiconductor rectifier CR20. This is a half-wave circuit connected to furnish blocking bias to the amplifier tubes under receive conditions and operating bias when transmitting. It also furnishes power for changeover relay K1. Voltage from the third secondary winding is applied to two semiconductor rectifier strings connected in full-wave voltage doubler configuration. These strings consist of CR1-CR8, C44-C51 in one string, and CR9-CR16, C52-C59 in the other. The parallel capacitors equalize the reverse voltages impressed across the diode junctions and protect against damage by transients. The output of this supply provides approximately 1600 volts dc under load for the amplifier tube plates.

SAFETY INTERLOCK CIRCUITS

The rf and power supply compartment covers operate safety interlock switches for operator protection. Switch S5 is located in the power supply compartment. Switches S6 and S7 are located in the rf compartment. Cover removal closes these switches and shorts the high voltage to ground. This arrangement protects the operator from accidentally coming in contact with high-voltage d-c which is present in either compartment.

POWER CONTROL CIRCUITS

The front-panel ON-OFF switch breaks one side of the a-c line in the OFF position. When operated to the ON position, a-c power is applied to the power transformer primaries and the tube-cooling fan B1. Overload protection is provided by eight-ampere fuses F1 and F2. These are used for both 115-volt a-c and 230-volt a-c operation.

ALC CIRCUITS

Automatic load control (alc) is a compressor circuit operating at radio frequencies. In the 30L-1, the grid-to- plate capacities of the amplifier tubes in conjunction with capacitors C22, C23, C24, and C25 form capacitive voltage dividers. Under modulation, an rf voltage is developed across these dividers and L3. It is coupled to the alc rectifier CR19 through capacitor C72. The r-f voltage is rectified and filtered to produce a negative d-c control voltage which is proportional to the modulation level. The load resistor for CR19 must be provided by the exciter alc circuits. This voltage is applied to the control grid of a low-level r-f amplifier tube or tubes in the exciter. The time constants of these circuits have fast attack, slow- release characteristic. The alc threshold is controlled by the amount of reverse bias on CR19. This voltage is developed across R7 in the plate supply bleeder network, and varied by potentiometer R16. It is adjusted at the factory for optimum operation in conjunction with the internal alc circuits of exciters such as the KWM-1, KWM-2/2A, or 32S-1. Normally it will not need readjustment.

This system allows a high average level of modulation and optimum power output from the amplifier, within the rated limits of distortion.

METERING CIRCUITS

One section of the METER switch, S3, selects the output voltage from a tuning and loading bridge circuit. This circuit consists of the power amplifier tubes, CR17, CR18, and the associated load resistors and filter networks. The bridge is balanced when the plate circuit TUNING and LOADING controls are adjusted to present the proper load impedance to the power amplifier plates. The meter then will read zero.

The second section of the meter switch connects the meter to the plate supply through a four-megohm multiplier resistor to indicate the dc voltage output. It is read on the D.C. KILOVOLT scale.

The third section of the meter switch connects the meter, through R10, across shunt, R8. This indicates power amplifier plate current. It is read on the D.C. AMPS scale.

N8FVJ Rating: 2021-08-06 Lot of Amp for the price Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. It been a few years and the prices have increased a lot for used amplifiers. Higher power amps in the 1000 watt to 1500 watt output class start at over $1000 used! Heathkit SB-220s that sold for $800 last year are well over $1000 and rebuilt as high as $1800. So, lets compare the affordable lower cost amplifiers and the Collins 30L-1 to the competition first.

In this power class, the competitors are the Heathkit SB-200, Yaesu FL-2100B, Ameritron AL-811H, Dentron GLA-1000B and Amp Supply LA-1000. All are 500 to 600 watts PEP output. All amps listed have a tuned input for solid-state transceivers. (GLA-1000 non B missing the tuned input). The AL-811H & LA-1000 have 160 meters, rest are 80 meters on up.

Transformer weight is a factor of build quality and directly relates to power output with good voltage regulation. The Collins 30L-1 has a 19lb transformer thus is healthy like the SB-220 and FL-2100B that also are 19lbs. The AL-811H transformer is 17lbs and sufficient as the amp maintains 1500 volts (1800 volts no load) at over 600 watts PEP peak out. The GLA-1000B and LA-1000 are 14lbs each being a little light weight for 500 watts out, but failures are very rare.

The sweep tubes in the GLA-1000B and LA-1000 are heavy duty enough to produce 125 watts PEP out per tube (4 tubes).

The AL-811H and 30L-1 use 811A tubes and the Yaesu FL-2100B and SB-200 use a pair of 572b tubes. Two 572B are superior to four 811A tubes due to the graphite plate. And, you can get 700 watts PEP vs the recommended 600 watts PEP from the 811A tubes. Although the AL-811H is rated at 800 watts PEP out, the rating is over the 811A recommend output.

Sweep tube amps used to be about $300, but are now selling for at about $450 to $600. The SB-200 & FL-2100B are about $600. The AL-811H about $900. And, the 30L-1 is about $550 with shopping for best price. Some have sold for $800 and higher.

Tube replacement costs is about $30 to $40 per 811A tube and 572B about $75. The 572B supply is sketchy and RF Parts does not have Chinese stock right now. The AL-811H does not need a rebuild, the rest should have the electrolytic capacitors replaced. The SB-200 has a lot of rebuilt amps for sale.

The trick with 811A tubes is to tune at reduced power and quickly or you can burn a hole thru the fragile plate. These tubes are not near as rugged as the 572B. About 5 seconds at full power key-down is the limit. Perhaps 8 seconds at 50% reduced power input. 600 watts PEP output requires about 60 watts PEP input. Frankly, the 30L-1 is not an amp you want to use for AM or RTTY service.

I believe the Collins 30L-1 is the best deal out there with some prices in the $550 range and much better built than the sweep tube amps. I say the build quality of the AL-811H, SB-200 and FL-2100B are not far off the Collins build, but not equal. Unlike a few SB-200 transformer failures, the 30L-1 transformer failure is non existent. I read some FL-2100B had band-switch failures.

YS1RS Rating: 2019-06-06 Wonderful Amp! Time Owned: more than 12 months. Have owned one for 7 years now. It was old from circa 1962.

Needed power supply rebuild which I did with a modern Young Kim board replacement. I couldn’t be more happy.

Added an Ameritron In Rush Current Outlet protection and turn the amp on/off from that, not using and saving the difficult to find 30L-1 power switch.

It is very easy to tune. I use it with my KWM-2 transceiver. Actually it is giving 900 Watts output but is too much. Lower your input level and use it with 600 Watts max. 60 Watts input is good enough.

I am located in a warm country. Have installed an extra fan to it and never had problems. One drop of oil on the internal fan is all you need. Try to find 811A tubes from RCA if possible.

If you can get one of these amps just grab it.

You’ll love this small jewel.

Collins quality!

KA4KOE Rating: 2018-09-06 Well Engineered Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. This is one great amplifier. Once you get used to the low power tuning scheme, the amp is a snap to use, especially if matched with an S-line transmitter or KWM-2/2a.

600 watts is plenty.

K4GNO Rating: 2017-07-04 Excellent Quality Time Owned: more than 12 months. I purchased my 30L-1 new in 1976 so it has given me 41 years of excellent performance. A few years ago, I had Peter K2LRC put in a new power supply board and several new components. Other than that, all I’ve had to do is replace tubes in the 41 years. What more can I say!

N1BIC Rating: 2015-11-03 Could not ask for more with my Collins 30L-1 Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. Peter Wittenberg sold me a restored Collins 30L-1 with the new power supply. The amp and Peter exceeded my expectations! Peter also restored a Collins 30L-1 I bought off of an auction site. Luckily, I am within a few hours drive of Peter’s location in Annapolis, MD and was able to personally deliver my amp for service. I was very impressed with Peter’s knowledge and his shop (show room). He took time for a visit and stepped me through what he would do to the auction amp. When I made another trip to pick it up I had another chance to learn things that I would never have known about a 30L-1. I even got the parts back that Peter replaced.

He tested all tubes, replaced the power supply, rebuild the bias network, checked the ALC circuit, lubricated RF switches, aligned the input RF circuits and provided output data for each band using a Bird 43, a Bird 4381 and a HP8640B signal generator. Readings agree with my LP-100A.

A great experience with a great person at a reasonable charge.

His website: http://www.k2lrc.com/

A very happy experience and stations I call, almost always, come back to me and I frequently get “good audio” comments as well.

VE6ND Rating: 2015-02-18 Excellent Time Owned: more than 12 months. Well, I have owned a Collins 30L-1 for well over 30 years and in that time I have had 8 of them!

Never a problem with distortion or any other issues.

Starting out in the late 70’s the adage was to use a twenty foot length of coax to the radio. Being 17 years old I figured the 48″ length would suffice, and you know what? It did.

Some of the experts will tell you that it oscillates on 10 meters and does this and that.

Horse cookies! Just because you have a tone of blogs and bragging rights does not make you right.

If you pick one up for about $500 it’s a good deal!

Mine, I get an easy 850 watts out from the 811’s and don’t! Go to the 572B’s! Stupidity!

Art Collins designed this for what it was.

Use it!!!

Glenn, VE6ND

K9RJ Rating: 2015-01-26 Quality! Time Owned: more than 12 months. I have many amps: ACOM 2000A, Drake L7. Henry 2K-4, HB 3-1000Z and the Collins 30L-1. The Collins is rock solid and if you ever need to repair or re-tube it is easy. I get 500+ watts with 50 watts drive and about 650 watts out with 60 watts drive. I think it looks as good as the day it was made. Far superior to Heathkits and modern ‘cheap’ amps. Thank you Art Collins for a wonderful amp!

KC9WI Rating: 2013-12-22 The Steinway of Amps Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. The Collins 30L-1 was one of only a few HF amps which could add value to my hybrid station: a Kenwood TS-830s, an all band doublet fed with real ladder line and a Dentron MT-3000a tuner. That’s why I searched for one. It is the rare QSO that doesn’t include a comment on my great signal and beautiful audio quality. I live for those comments and wouldnt trade one of them for all the S-units in the world. This is why I got back into the hobby after 45 years. I put the 30L-1 right up there with the S Class Mercedes and Steinway piano … a category Classic.

N9LAP Rating: 2013-10-26 Quality never goes out of style! Time Owned: N.A. Quiet as any amp with tubes ever made! One thing that doesn’t get discussed enough is the audio quality this amp delivers. Obviously if the exciter is junk, the audio will just be amplified, but with all things in the exciter being good, the cleanliness of this amps audio is simply amazing and pure. Yes, today you can buy amps which run the same tube compliment, but starting with the paper like cases they are wrapped in and the lightweight components the Collins is in quite another class, period! For the price why would you even consider another? It’s that good and I own Alphas, Henry’s etc.when I run it on 75 meters people actually ask if it’s the Collns!
