TAKE OUT Phrasal Verb Meaning & Examples in English

Phrasal Verbs with CARRY: "carry out", "carry away", "carry on"…

A phrasal verb is usually a verb plus a preposition that we use in a different context than the verb’s original meaning. For example, did you know that “to carry a tune” means to sing well? To “carry” literally means to move something while supporting it, but it can mean different things when used in phrasal verbs. In this lesson, you will learn what it means to “carry out your tasks”, “carry on” in class or at work, “get carried away”, and more.

QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/phrasalverbswithcarry/

TRANSCRIPT

Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. I’m Adam. Today’s lesson is about phrasal verbs, using the verb “carry”. And again, phrasal… Phrasal verbs are verbs plus a preposition that, together, means something else than the two words themselves. Now, I know you’ve seen many of these phrasal verb lessons. Don’t worry, I think we’re almost done, because I’ve gone through most of them.

“Carry”, usually you carry… You carry a basket, you carry a child, you move something in your arms. You carry it. Right? So, most of those have to do with that idea of carrying something.

The most common of these is “carry on”. Okay? What does it mean to “carry on”? A few meanings. One is to continue. So, my staff is having a meeting, and I say: “Oh, sorry to interrupt everyone, but I need to make an announcement.” I make an announcement. “Everybody understands. Yes? Okay, carry on, continue.” Okay? It could also mean to continue something that’s been going on for a long time. So, for example, Jimmy wants to carry on his father’s tradition of having a barbeque every Sunday with the whole family, so to keep something going, like a tradition, a custom, etc.

“Carry on with” is a little bit different. Actually, it’s quite different. When you “carry on with someone”, it usually mean you were flirting. Now, I’m not sure if you know this word, “to flirt”. “To flirt” means to, like, have some fun with somebody of the opposite sex, or it could mean to have an actual affair, to have an affair with someone, to carry on with someone. Now, there’s quite a few differences between British English and American English. In British English, “carry on” can also mean to talk, and talk, and talk, and talk, usually complaining about something. “Oh, stop carrying on about that. We don’t care anymore.” In American English, it would just be go on. “Stop. Oh, you’re going on and on about this. Just forget it. Let it go. Move on. Continue.” Okay? So, British/American, slightly different.

“Carry over”. “Carry over”, it could mean carry something from here over to here, physically, but it could also mean to move something to another time, another place. For example, the meeting we had, we had too many things to speak about, we didn’t finish everything on time, so we will carry it over to tomorrow. Tomorrow we will start again, and finish what we need to do. So, “carry over”, move to a different time, place, position.

“Carry back”. Sometimes, you know, I’m driving in my car and I turn on the radio, and I hear this song, and it just carries me back to when I was a teenager in high school, and when I was just having fun. So, “carry back” means sort of like remind, but more in terms of nostalgia. Nostalgia. It just takes you back, carries you back to another time and place, a different mindset, etc.

“Carry around”. So, I can… If I have a baby, I could put on my little pouch thing on my back, put my baby on the back, and carry it around as I go for a little walk. So, you can, again, physically carry something around, but you can also carry around baggage, emotional baggage. So, for example, if you feel very, very guilty about something you did or something that happened, you can carry that guilt around with you for your whole life. It’s like a weight on your shoulders, and you’re carrying it around, even though it’s just inside your head. Okay? So, that person is carrying around too much baggage, emotional baggage.

“Carry off” means to complete something successfully. So, I had a big presentation at work, and after… After the presentation, my boss comes up to me, he goes: “You carried that off great. Good job.” Right? I did it, I finished it, successful, everybody was happy. “Carry off” also means to take away. Okay? I picked her up and carried her off into the sunset, my darling, whoever she might be.

“Out”, “carry out” basically means to do, or more correctly is to perform. You carry out a task. Okay? You do something. If the boss asks you to do something and he wants you to carry… Carry it out as soon as possible. Okay? In British English, “carry out” is the same as American “take out”. So you go to a restaurant, you order your food, and carry out; to go.

Of course, big thanks to my friend Jimmy for filming the bits in Seattle. (http://bit.ly/1OM5Aio)
And thanks to those friendly people who let us film them.

CÁCH DÙNG “A” / “AN” VÀ “THE”

“The toilet’s broken.”

2. Địa lý

Dùng “the” trước những thứ sau:
sa mạc: The Sahara Desert is huge.
đại dương: The Pacific Ocean is also huge.
sông: Hanoi is on the Red River.
dẫy núi: Mount Everest is in the Himalaya mountains.
khu vực địa lý: People in the north speak differently from people in the south.

Không dùng “the” trước những thứ sau:
hồ: I love West Lake.
thành phố, tỉnh, bang: I come from Hà Giang province.
lục địa: Have you ever been to Asia?
ngọn núi riêng biệt: I’ve never been to Mount Fansipan.
khu vực địa lý có một trong những tính từ “northern,” “southern,” “eastern,” hoặc “western” bổ nghĩa cho nó: I come from southern Vietnam.

3. Những nơi mà thành phố nào cũng có

Bạn phải dùng “the” hoặc “a” trước những nơi sau đây. Dùng “the” nếu nó là nơi bạn thường xuyên đi đến. Dùng “a” cho nơi không cụ thể.
bank: I need to go to the bank.
Is there a bank near here?
cinema: Let’s go to the cinema.
hospital: He’s in the hospital right now.
post office: The post office is closed.
airport: How much is a taxi to the airport?
train station / bus station / bus stop: The bus station was so crowded.
doctor: Should I go to the doctor?
dentist: When was the last time you went to the dentist?

Không dùng “a” hoặc “the” trước những nơi sau đây:
home: My mom is at home today.
work: I have to go to work right now.
jail / prison: He went to prison for ten years.
church: How often do you go to church?
bed: I usually go to bed at 11.
school: I didn’t go to school today.
I met my best friend in high school.
university / college: I studied math at university.

4. Từ viết tắt:

Không dùng “the” trước những từ viết tắt được phát âm như một từ. Ví dụ:
UNESCO (phát âm là /ju: ˈnes kəʊ/): UNESCO chose Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage Site.

Nhưng với những từ viết tắt được phát âm từng chữ một, thì “the” phải đứng trước. Ví dụ:
the EU
the FBI
the UN

Một trường hợp ngoại lệ là “the” không đứng trước những từ viết tắt liên quan đến trường đại học:
I got an MBA at UCLA.

5. Trò trơi, môn thể thao, và môn học

Không dùng “a” / “an” hoặc “the” trước các trò chơi, môn thể thao, và môn học:
I hate studying literature.
I watch football every day.
Backgammon is my favorite game.

6. Ngôn ngữ

Không dùng “the” trước các ngôn ngữ:
I speak English and Vietnamese.

Nhưng nếu dùng từ “language” sau tên của ngôn ngữ ấy, thì lại phải có “the” đứng trước:
What’s the most common word in the English language.

👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/davidsbeenhere

With social distancing and stayathome orders in place due to the COVID19 pandemic, I decided to do something special. Because I can’t travel to other countries right now, I figured it would be fun to bring one of my favorite countries to me! Come along with me as I grab some Indian vegetarian food take out and enjoy a delicious Indian feast with the love of my life, Ana Hoffmann!

I headed out to my favorite local Indian restaurant, Bollywood Masala to grab some aloo samosa, dal, veg korma, papdi chaat, dahi puri, eggplant makhani, and paneer makhani!

We quickly headed out to get our order and came back home. There, we put everything into bowls. The dishes contained lots of fresh herbs and looked really good.

We started with the lassis, which were nice and refreshing. Then, we dove into the dahi puri, which is a crispy puff ball with sev, yogurt, and several other things inside. They’re so good! We fed each other a couple. It contained tamarind chutney, sev, coriander, parsley, and red onions.

Next was the aloo samosa with mint chutney. They’re basically fried pastries with potatoes and curry inside. It was so good. They could be a meal! And like with all Indian food, it’s all about the chutney!

Then, we grabbed some papdi chaat, which is a street food dish made with fried dough wafers called papdi, chickpeas, potatoes, dahi, tamarind chutney, and sev. It’s like Indian nachos. The sweetness of the tamarind chutney is amazing. It’s the best veg food on the planet! I love to use my hands to eat it!

Then, we went with the rice, which contains cardamom. Ana tried it with some eggplant makhani and veg korma. I got the saag paneer, and paneer makhani. I started with the paneer makhana, which had a rich, red sauce on it and contained Kashmiri chilies.

The eggplant makhani was really sweet, while my paneer makhani was really sweet and not spicy at all. It was so creamy. The veg korma was even sweeter!

Then, we got a paratha, one of the first dishes I ever tried in India. I tried it in Chandni Chowk in Delhi in a small alleyway. It was the best paratha of my life! I grabbed some of the food with the paratha. It was so good! The best thing to do is to just dig in with it and soak up as much of the sauces as possible.

Mixing everything was really nice. The sauce on the paneer makhani had the most incredible sauce. Then, I grabbed some veg korma, which was super creamy and filled with huge pieces of broccoli, and the eggplant makhani. The eggplant was a little spicy and creamy with nice chunks of eggplant! While we ate, I talked a bit about my travel plans postcoronavirus, like Bangladesh and Nepal.

Then, we went for the dal. We only had a bit because we were starting to get full. Everything was too good! The dal was light and super good. Then, I went for the veg korma. The broccoli was nice and creamy and super sweet! This meal was phenomenal!

I got some more rice to mix with the korma sauce. The seven dishes have huge portions and a meal like this could easily feed three people.

Of all the dishes, my favorite was the dahi puri and I also loved the eggplant and the papdi chaat. Ana’s favorite was the papdi chaat. I had one last bite of samosa and Ana had one last bite of papdi chaat. They were so moist, they wouldn’t have been good later.

Please support your local communities right now if you can because they’re all hurting. Just be responsible, stay safe, and keep social distancing, and hopefully this will all be behind us soon.

I hope you liked coming along on our Indian vegetarian food take out adventure!

🥢INGREDIENT AFFILIATE PAGE https://www.amazon.com/shop/influencer078efbf8

🥢RECIPE Note: Here I want to correct a mistake in the video. At 03:16 I said to heat up the oil to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. It was an audio mistake, please keep the oil temperature at 380 degrees Fahrenheit while frying. I am really sorry about that. The video is already uploaded, I can’t edit it anymore.

Ingredients to marinate the chicken (Serve 23 people with some white rice)

1 lb chicken thigh, cut into 1.5 inches cubes
2 cloves of garlic
black pepper to taste
1.5 tsp of soy sauce [Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/2L72ISh] 1/2 tsp of salt
3/8 tsp of baking soda
1 egg white
0.5 tbsp of starch (add it to the marinade)
1 cup of Potato starch (use it to coat the chicken)
2 cups of oil to fry the chicken

Ingredients for the sauce

2 tbsp of Honey
3 tbsp of brown sugar
2.5 tbsp of Soy sauce [Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/2L72ISh] 3 tbsp of water
2.5 tbsp of ketchup
1 tbsp of vinegar
Sweet potato starch water to thicken the sauce (2 tsp of potato starch mixed with 2 tsp of water) (Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/2SoBbiG)
1 tbsp of sesame oil [Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/2SCg1OT] 1.5 tbsp of toasted sesame seeds [Amazon Link: https://amzn.to/2A6wsfV] Diced scallion as a garnish

INSTRUCTION

Cut some boneless and skin on chicken leg into 1inch size pieces. I prefer dark meat when making fried chicken. It gives you a juicer and tender result. And yes, you can use chicken breast if you wish to.

Marinate the chicken with 1 tsp of grated garlic, 1.5 tsp of soy sauce, 1/2 tsp of salt, some black pepper to taste, 3/8 tsp of baking soda, 1 egg white, and 1/2 tbsp of starch. Cornstarch, potato or sweet potato starch, they all work, depends on what you used for the coating later. Mix everything until well combined. Cover it and let it sit for 40 minutes.

While waiting, let’s prepare the coating. I found out that using sweet potato starch makes the crispiest sesame chicken. You can also use potato starch or cornstarch. They will give you a similar result.

Get a spread bottle and gently spread a tiny bit of water into the starch a few times. Some of the starch will clump up and create some mini balls. You just wait for 10 seconds to let it set and use the whisk to stir it. Then spread more water, wait for 10 seconds, and stir it again. Do this 3 times in total. Maybe some of you never heard this method before. Give it a try, you will be surprised.

Add half of the starch into a big container. Spread it out. Add in the chicken. Try to separate them piece by piece. Cover the meat with the other half of the starch. Put on the lid and shake for a few minutes. Pick out the meat and shake off all the excess flour.

Heat up the oil to 380 F. Add in the chicken piece by piece so they don’t stick together. Don’t crow the pan because it overflows easily. The temperature is hight. In less than 2 minutes, you can feel that the surface is getting crispy and the color is slightly yellow. Take them out. Then we gonna do the second batch. Before that, you might want to fish out all those small little bits. It is optional but it does affect the quality of the oil.

Keep the temperature at 380 F, and fry the second batch of the chicken. Once you are done, let all the chicken rest for about 15 minutes and we gonna double fry the chicken. Double frying will stabilize the crunchiness so it lasts longer. You just keep an eye on the color. In about 2 or 3 minutes, it will reach that beautiful golden color. Take them out and set it aside.

Next, make the sauce. In a large bowl, add in 3 tbsp of brown sugar, 2 tbsp of liquid honey, 2.5 tbsp of soy sauce, 2.5 tbsp of ketchup, 3 tbsp of water, 1 tbsp of vinegar. Mix them well.

Put your wok on the stove and pour all the sauce in. There is some sugar sink in the bottom of the bowl, make sure you clean that. Keep stirring the sauce on medium heat. Bring it to a boil and pour in some potato starch water to thicken the sauce. Keep stirring until it reaches a thin syrup texture. Add the chicken back into the wok, along with 1 tbsp of sesame oil, 1.5 tbsp of a toasted sesame seed, garnish with diced scallions.
