⁣The best stretch for the Lats will involve every segment that it attaches to. It is a large muscle that attaches to the lower back/pelvis, travels up the thorax, and inserts into the shoulder.⁣ Getting a good stretch of the Lat involves each segment!

Also due to its attachments, the Lat is frequently involved in pain or dysfunction in lower back, mid back/ribs, and shoulder/arm. Here’s how to create some length in the muscle!⁣

𝐓𝐨 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦:⁣
1️⃣Go into half kneeling while tucking your pelvis (posterior tilt).⁣
2️⃣Bring the involved side arm up so that the hand is in the upper back. Pull the elbow with the opposite hand.⁣
3️⃣Flex the trunk and bend away.⁣ Make sure to breathe!⁣

Fix Your Plank | 3 Tips for a Better Burn | Chesterfield Chiropractor


Planks are a common, and effective, way to build stability in the core. They are often done WRONG. Planks tend to be thought of only as a core exercise. In this video, we discuss where else you should feel this exercise.

The 3 areas that you should feel a front plank in is the abdominals, shoulder blades, and front of the neck. Planks are a great way to train these 3 regions even if you currently have back pain, neck, pain, and shoulder pain.

1. Feel it in the Abs
This is the obvious tip. Many people actually over utilize their lower back muscles to hold themselves up. This is usually identified by an increase in lower back arching. I simply ask my patients “where do you feel this” and they will typically include the lower back in their answer. Focus on tilting your pelvis backwards (posterior) by engaging your Abs and glutes. The key is using IntraAbdominal Pressure (IAP).

2. Feel it in the upper back/shoulder blades
This is a tricky area, and one that people tend to struggle with the most. I’ll often see a tendency to “shrug” the shoulders closer to the ears which tends to engage the upper traps. In addition, it puts the shoulder joint into a vulnerable position. Instead, focus on pulling the shoulders down and opening the chest and shoulders. This will help engage the mid back and shoulder blade muscles better.

3. Feel it in the front of the neck
The neck is often not considered in most exercises. Especially those where we are facing downwards (push ups, planks, etc.). A common mistake is to look forward which increases the extension in the neck. In this video, you can even see a “crease” where she tends to extend at throughout the day. Instead, we want to engage a muscle group called the deep neck flexors. To do that, you have to focus on “tucking the chin”. You should feel this deep in the front of the neck.

Planks are a great FULL BODY exercise. Not just for the core. When done correctly, you should feel it in the areas listed above and be able to maintain your breathing throughout the set. The current research suggests that planks need only to be done for 2030 seconds. Those that are planking for several minutes are likely cheating! Don’t shy away from planks if you are in pain. You should be able to do them without flaring up your symptoms. Only if you do them right!

🔹The 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘳 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘢 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘦 (𝘛𝘍𝘓) is a lateral hip muscle that is often involved with many dysfunctions of the hip.⁣

🔹It is a hip 𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘰𝘳, hip 𝘢𝘣𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳, and hip 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 and blends with the IT band.⁣

🔹We find that the TFL is a poor substitute for optimal glute function. It is often tender in individuals with hip pain and IT band tightness.⁣

💡Stretching this muscle can be tricky and is often dependent on one’s hip structure. Ultimately, it is WAY more important to focus on proper hip stability rather than static stretching.⁣

🔑Be sure to keep the thigh as relaxed as possible.⁣
🔑Make sure to avoid extending the lower back and/or letting the pelvis dump forward.⁣
🔑Push the knee down to separate the hip.⁣

How to Improve Shoulder Function | Serratus Uppercut | Chesterfield Chiropractor


Proper serratus anterior activity is crucial when trying to improve shoulder function. The serratus anterior is a scapular protractor and upward rotator. Essentially, when you raise your arm, the serratus helps to guide your shoulder blade with the arm movement. The serratus anterior is also crucial for maintaining posterior scapular tilt during upper body activity.

To perform the exercise, grab a light dumbbell. We recommend to start at around 5 lbs or less. Hold the weight with the palm up, the elbow at about 90 degrees, and the shoulder in about 30 degrees of external rotation (rotated outwards). From there, raise the arm up towards the ceiling in a fist pump motion.

Things to avoid:
shrugging the shoulder
bending or twisting the spine
losing the starting arm position
not going through the full range of motion

Another que we like to implement is to push your arm outwards as you are raising it. When done correctly, you should feel the burn in the shoulder blade as well as the arm pit region. You can do the exercise with weights, bands, or other objects. We stress proper form and to not increase in weight too much. As always, stop the exercise if there is pain and seek help from a professional.
