Best & Worst Foods to Eat with Gout | Reduce Risk of Gout Attacks and Hyperuricemia

Gout is an inflammatory monoarticular arthropathy that is caused by monosodium urate crystal deposition within particular joints in the body. The urate crystals result from hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid in the blood), which is derived from purine metabolism. Purines can come from a variety of different foods, with some dietary selections having high purine content, and other selections having lower amounts of purines. In this lesson, we discuss the worst foods to eat with gout (foods and beverages that have high levels of purines), and the best foods to eat with gout (foods and beverages that have lower levels of purines).

GUT WRENCHING GOUT

One of the MOST PAINFUL conditions that we treat is gout!

This painful affliction is caused by the buildup of uric acid in the blood.

The acid typically dissolves and is eliminated in the urine, but for some, it will build up and form tiny crystals that lead to inflammation in the toes, feet, and knees.
These joints may become red, hot and so painful that even the touch of a sheet or sock is unbearable. 😵

Gout attacks can become more severe and longerlasting with each incident.

FUN FACT Men under 65 are four times more likely than women of the same age to experience gout!

Acute Gout Characteristics

Acute gout attacks are characterized by a rapid onset and escalation with joint pain typically peaking within 24 hours of attack onset. An acute attack often begins to remit after 5 to 12 days without intervention, but complete resolution may take longer in some patients.

Treatment Recommendations

Therapy for acute gout attacks aims to reduce pain and promote a full, early resolution. The ACR recommends pharmacologic therapy as firstline treatment with adjunctive topical ice and rest as needed.

Typically, monotherapy is appropriate if the individual is experiencing mildtomoderate pain affecting ≤ 2 joints of any size. Severe pain or attacks affecting multiple joints may benefit from initial combination therapy. Three firstline therapies are available: nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or cyclooxygenaseCOX2 inhibitors, colchicine, or systemic glucocorticoids

  1. my attacks seem to come from dehydration, high sugar consumption. I'm having an intense attack for the last 2 weeks. I had covid and lost 15 pounds and I'm thinking this triggered my attack.

  2. Pork and beer are my triggers. Ate a meat lovers pizza from PizzaHut and been hobbling all week. Dr wrote a rx for indocin and insurance company balked on paying for it. Anthem is a scam.

  3. This video wasn’t useful. All of the comments of gout suffered is what makes this. One of the most valuable tools is to attack it as soon as you feel that initial pain. Take an NSAID of flush with water and take 800mg of Advil. Or juice cucumbers. They are highly alakaline. Many of us who have goat have never had an attack from red meat, seafood, or beer.

  4. I first started getting gout at 26 years old I am now 44. Lots of soda pop, Lots of Pizza, Milky Way bars, Buffalo Wild Wings, steak, Arby’s roast beef, shrimp, fish oil. That stuff triggers my gout.

  5. I was just diagnosed with gout. It goes to my knees. My knees swell and I can’t walk. It goes back and forth from each knee. I’ve been having these flat ups since 2017. The orthopedic dr would just drain the fluid and inject a steroid. Tu orthopedic dr tested two different times. I wa just referred to a arthritis dr who did a blood test for gout.

  6. I have suffered from gout for 20 years, winter is the worst and I usually have 4 or 5 gout flares over this time. This year I stared taking Bioglan red krill oil double strength 1000mg and for the first time ever I had a gout free winter. I even upped the meat and seafood to see what would happen and just ended up with a few twinges (so i backed off). Great product and yes i am still sensible and watch my triggers and drink a
    lot of water:)

  7. I have a pain on top outer part of my foot , I can't walk at all hurts too much, Lol sucks I live in the US ( health insurance) I'd like to know if I have a torn ligament or gout, been running and drinking a lot.

  8. I'm getting gout trying to listen to these guys babble on. Half way through and the only thing I know is you guys talk like an old married couple and how not to find you on social media.

  9. So heres some info into your trigger theory. I am for the first time suffering with a "bout of gout" in my big toe. My backgrounds isssss : NON DRINKER, watch what I eat because im a type 1 diabetic (no sugar or fructose corn syrup), small amounts of meat…BUT I am terrible and do not drink enough water!….the best I can figure is my kidneys are compromised from the Diabetes and I dont drink enough water to help flush them? When people talk about the pain of gout…OMG…that is no f'ing joke 😳😳😳 the pain went to level 10 in 24hrs until I started taking anti inflammatory medication.

  10. First "bout of gout" – I also like that silly expression – was at the age of 16. Apparently this amounted to medical history in the making! Attacks in my distant youth were mostly confined to a big toe. I seldom sought to avoid triggers and mostly relied on anti-inflammatories. In later years the beast has attacked elbows, hands, knees, lower spine and even shoulders. Talk about housemaids' knee! Red meat specifically beef has almost always been a key trigger as has tomatoes; beer if you stop drinking it for a while and then foolishly have a few too many. One of the damndest things is that when South Africa banned all alcohol as part of the government's idiotic Covid-19 prevention scheme, the inability to have a glass or two of dry red wine in the evening apparently sparked some of the worst attacks ever. It didn't matter what else I ate or didn't eat. And just as mysteriously, when the ban was lifted, my gout fled. Non-triggers in my case are eggs, seafood of any description, spinach, chicken and just about anything else. Oh, and I can eat pork until the cows come home. That said, I feel terribly sorry for the pigs who are very friendly social animals.

  11. My number one is soda. I did a test after not having soda for a year, had ZERO gout flare ups during that time, I drank 2 cans of soda in one day. The next day I had a massive flare up. I always get gout in my toes like most people. I recognized that my toes would turn purple after sitting in a chair for periods of time. My wife suggested I purchase a pair of leg massager and best compression socks to help circulation. I can now drink soda and pretty much anything I want, at a reasonable level, as long has I wear my socks on those days. Zero flare ups. I don’t take alopurinal or anything anymore. They have been a a Godsend!
